What Is Molarity?
Molarity is the number of moles of solute present in one litre of solution. It is commonly expressed as mol/L or M and is widely used when preparing and analysing pharmaceutical solutions.
Molarity Formula
The standard relationship is M = n/V, where M is molarity in mol/L, n is the amount of solute in moles and V is the final solution volume in litres. When the mass of a substance is known, the number of moles can first be calculated from mass divided by molecular weight.
How to Calculate Molarity
Enter the known amount of solute and solution volume, select the appropriate units and calculate the unknown quantity. If mass rather than moles is available, molecular weight is used to convert the mass into moles before determining molarity.
Example of Molarity Calculation
If 0.5 mol of a substance is present in a final solution volume of 2 L, the molarity is 0.5 ÷ 2 = 0.25 M. Always use the final solution volume rather than the initial solvent volume.
